Do you split the terrace up into four parts and sell tickets for each area ensuring even crowd distribution. Main issue is that everyone wants to stand centre.

I like to get fairly deep in the 22 - would rather have an excellent view of some tries rather than a standard view of all of them.

Plus it's nearer the bar and the bogs.

I'm usually about the Aquinas 22 on the terrace though occasionally the Memorial 22. Interestingly there are distinctly diffetent crowd vibes on each - perhaps a bit more GAWA at the memorial end (not in a bad way btw)

As mentioned the backfilling of the terrace makes it difficult to find spaces. As well as this it always looks full closer to the walkways but if u can get past the begrudgers who feel like you are walking through their living room there tends to plenty of room further in. I ve seen in other stadiums where there are 2 lines of stewards down the terrace who gradually expand from the middle out. Allows some element of control on filling but not sure id want to give event sec more responsibility.

It does make it difficult to fill it up just before kick off though. I’m not sure what the solution is.

TV camera on the opposite stand showing where the space is and put it on the appropriate big screen.

Could easily have the big screen at memorial end show the camera pointing at the prom and the screen at the Aquineas end show the camera pointing at the Terrace.

Folks could have a look at the screen and figure it out for themselves. Cameras could be directed toward noticeable empty spots to help.


Although that would mean no time for SUFTUMselfies and similar sh!te on the screen... so probably a no go.

Some guy has it on bakebook that Ulster rugby have set a terrace capacity of 3.3 persons per 1 metre square against the health and safety exec maximum allowance of 4.5 persons per metre square. Therefore opportunity is there to increase terrace capacity.

Not sure for those who dwell on the terrace how practical that would be?

Backloading is a problem. Makes it very hard to identify space on the terraces

I see they now have wee feet on the floor of the lineout bar so you know where to stand.

Have to say, 4.5/m2 looks a bit snug.

Seems Ulster are then well under the maximum allowance and could therefore support larger crowds which would make the 18,000 achievable, albeit managing the terrace crowd safety would be the challenge.

If I may just cut in on this very interesting discussion. The maximum number of spectators is not solely based on crowd density but on a number of other key factors including movement and facilities. The maximum density that can be applied at sports grounds is 47 people per 10m sq (4.7 per metre Sq) as licensed by the SGSA but this will be reduced taking into account a number of factors, the likely size of spectators (rugby fans tend to be on the large side) clothing likely to be worn (rugby usually played in the winter in a cold climate) and the time taken to evacuate any spectator area in an emergency.Therefore it is more likely to be nearer the 4.0 figure. Once this is calculated it is given a licence by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority and a safety certificate by Belfast City Council. It appears that they have set the figure at 18,196 based on these calculations. The old turnstiles at Ravenhill did not give an accurate estimate of crowd attendance but the new system is a lot more accurate. Therefore Ulster Rugby must ensure that they do not sell tickets in excess of the figure as they would contravene some very serious regulations and run a very real risk of having their licence suspended. This is taken very seriously as the worst incidents of deaths or serious injury at sports grounds generally occur from a primary or secondary risk of crowd crushing. I would suggest that the gaps you see are due to unused tickets as other posters have suggested.

having had to give up the s/t this year (hopefully a temporary measure, given that I'm getting fleeced on Ticketbarsteward's booking fees for single tickets anyway) I've high hopes that a slight increase in capacity is made available.

Edinburgh's attendance growth is impressive.

Devil is in the detail - 4,221, 5,191, 5,762, 27,437 and 4,873. The outliner of course was the Glasgow game over Christmas. Glasgow visit Murrayfield in R21. With the new ground, would make sense that the Glasgow games are moved into the big stadium etc. The average of 9,497 drops to 5,012 when you exclude the 1872 Cup game.

Just over 10 % of supporters would appear to have been so p-ssed off they made their disgust known by non attendance

About what I would have expected to be honest

There are those who consider such action a betrayal of the players and would continue their attendance .

I hope the IRFU take note that the Ulster public recognise innocence and disapprove of victimisation.
