With the battle for the leadership of the Conservative Party well under way this week some of you may wish to know/learn that "Conservative" in Irish is "Coimeadach" but the slightly easier word to know/learn is "Tora" which is Irish for "Tory".
And for those of you heading to Donegal at some stage over the summer "Tory Island" is the very easy to pronounce "Oilean Tora".

Tory (as in Conservatives) comes from the Irish word tóraidhe which means outlaw, robber, bandit.HwoodMike2umate wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 11:47 am With the battle for the leadership of the Conservative Party well under way this week some of you may wish to know/learn that "Conservative" in Irish is "Coimeadach" but the slightly easier word to know/learn is "Tora" which is Irish for "Tory".

It makes me smile to see them being called that and they haven't a clue as to how and where the nickname came from!

Good on you Mike for this thread but would phonetic spellings accompanying the Irish be a possibility? I'm sure I can make a fair stab at pronouncing 'stampa'. Not so confident about 'dleacht'.
