This sounds like good news if Campbell is U20 coach and continuing to manage the academy. Hopefully it gives more of our players exposure at that level.

Potential academy changes coming?
The whole academy system is now being reviewed and it will be streamlined – significantly.

Peter Malone is no longer the director of the Munster Academy and Peter Smyth, the head of elite player development, is currently seconded to the Munster Academy. Nobody knows how long he'll be there or what the next step will be.

The plan currently being proposed is for a national academy based, say, in Athlone or even Blanchardstown. All the provincial academies would be discontinued and all the talent would be schooled in the national academy.

At the end of the season the talent would be farmed out.

If Munster need a prop or Ulster need a centre they are picked out of the national academy, irrespective of where they live or were brought up or whether they always dreamed of playing in blue, red etc.

Some of the provinces have had slim pickings from their academies in recent years – others (like Leinster) have been spectacularly successful in sustained excellence in the quality of players that they have produced.

Go through the Leinster team when it is announced on Friday and see how many in the squad are academy graduates.

This, in theory, is an efficient way of distributing talent throughout the four provinces – but it will do serious damage to Leinster who have already provided too much talent for everyone else.

Leinster are now jealous of the backs we are producing. This is a scam.

Their d1ckhead fans still believe that players who never set foot in their academy are somehow theirs.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?

Correct
This would be the end of provincial rugby as we now it , and the "Ulster squad" would in effect be an Ireland D team, with our best home grown players getting tempted away to play for the A, B or C team.
When normality returns, see how this would effect ST sales and tv rights.

Agree totally, a further step to us becoming simply the Belfast branch of the IRFU, not good. Also not convinced it would save much money short term.

It won’t happen.

I can’t imagine any of the provinces could train without their academy players making up numbers.

Big problem -- many of those in the academies are at University as well being based in Athlone wouldn't appeal to many .

Although there is a certain merit in a pooling of year three academy players say at the end of the season.

Ulster have always been a sub branch of the IRFU nothing new in the concept only in Days of Old it exercised a greater power than is now evident -- thanks to clueless ALLmouth Logan

Bayern, where do I find the article quoted on the new central academy, from where? When I look up the link it is a different article from NF. Thanks in advance.
From the rolling glens of Antrim through the hills of Donegal we will stand and shout for Ulster as we win both scrum and maul from the lovely lakes of Fermanagh tae the shores of ould Lough Gall we will scream and shout for Ulster as we beat them one and all!

Any news on a new deal for Azur Allison for next season? Think it’s only him, David McCann and Bruce Houston whose academy contracts are up at the end of the season.

Seemed to be the next big back row coming through a few years ago, but McCann has seemed to overtake him and he’s gone quiet since. A back row of Allison, Marcus Rea and McCann in the future would be excellent imo.

Bruce is gone.

Don’t think Allison has impressed and can’t seem to stay injury free. Saying that if Matty Rea can get 50 caps there is hope for everyone.

Marcus will hopefully come through.

Real shame! Was hoping Allison could push on! He was good at U20. But as you say he’ll maybe be a late bloomer! Hopefully he hang on in there until the opportunity arises.

Would of been nice for a Rea, McCann, Allison backrow someday!
