No reason other than it's not as good marketing.big mervyn wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:22 am Is there a reason wht it is not called Team UK?

The competitors are still supposed to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The British Olympic Committee seems to have forgotten this.

I guess the reason they say/said Great Britain and Northern Ireland rather than United Kingdom is because the international standard naming convention is to name the country without unnecessary descriptors so The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is just Jordan. The People's Republic of China is just China. DDR and BRD needed theirs for differentiation. I suppose USA needs theirs too.
That's why the vehicle plate/ ISO 3166 is GB (short for Great Britain and Northern Ireland) rather than UK.
UK is a specially reserved abbreviation in ISO and actually did get used for top level domain names on tinetnet.

Another 2 langers in an Irish boat. Gold this time.
Here's the thing about rowing. Nobody knows who's really best. They're all essentially doing the same thing (ok one of 2 things - rowing or sculling) over the same distance, just in boats with different sized crews. Big countries will spread the talent around in the hope of winning more medals. Wee countries like Ireland will concentrate on a couple of crews. You're never going to get a race between the absolute best unlike say the 100m sprint.

Still, a gold is a gold.
I see a Belfast man got at least a bronze today.

I'm not usually a fan of the sport but Richie Woodall's commentary on the boxing is great and Ronald McIntosh's technical knowhow is fascinating.

Could be a spectacular day for North Down with McClenaghan going in the Pommel.
The triathlon sprint mixed relay was very entertaining. Better telly than the individual event.

Hard luck on McIlroy. He would have had a bronze in regular play but for the putt he missed near the end by inches.
The boxer clown who injured himself in the ring celebrating when he won the bronze the other day, and couldn't fight for the silver today as a result, should not be picked again.

Li Wen Wen also weighs three and a quarter Simone Biles (who is only 4ft 8ins tall, by the way)
Speaking about Biles and others, there's something very wrong with sport in contemporary culture when an activity that should be done for pleasure and should be a support to good mental health actually harms the athletes' mental health.
