Looks like Chris Martin reads the board. Loathe him or despise the pr1ck, some interesting ideas...

I hire cars for 2 week blocks. Not sure why but it is by far the cheapest way.

My mileage and driving patterns are consistent I,e. A daily commute of 20 miles each way combined with some urban driving,

The cars I've been given all have less than 10000 km on the clock.

Fortnight 1 Fiat 500 petrol self charging hybrid - 48.8 mpg

Fortnight 2 Kia Picanto petrol - 51.3 mpg

Would one not expect the hybrid to offer better fuel economy?

Picked up a Fiat Panda today. I'll give you the stats in 2 weeks!
So ... the Fiat Panda hybrid did 51.4 mpg.

I was also impressed with it's amphibious qualities. We had a stonking three inches of rain here today with little or no road drainage. I drove for about 10 miles with the water up to the sills with no probs although I did return minus a number plate

Hi Merv

Thanks for the info on the Panda.
Don't want to bore other posters on here too much, but the coefficient of drag has an effect when you have two similar powered vehicles, same engines, comparable weights. The 500 is wider than the Panda and has wider wheels and tyres thus creates a bit more drag.
In tests a small vehicle travelling say north to south with 10 mph head wind will lose up to 8 miles per gallon more than when travelling the same route south to north with the 10 mph tail wind. Small variations in tyre widths and profiles and even tyre pressures can have quite an effect on MPG. :thumleft:

Welcome back anoraks.

So ... last fortnight I had another Fiat 500 hybrid. This one did an impressive 61.7 mpg aided, I think, this time by less urban driving and less use of the aircon in more comfortable weather (mid 20s here now).

I've now got a Nissan Micra Acenta with a normal petrol engine

You'll be excited to learn I'm thinking of starting a thread on heat pumps! Anybody here qualified to dispense advice on those? Image
This is actually not a stupid suggestion but could usefully be expanded to include any heating systems that will be permitted once gas, oil, solid fuel are banned and there isn't enough electricity to use for heating after all the car batteries are charged up. Bring back the tread mills in prisons anyoneImage

All the wasted energy of exercise bikes should be harnessed as well. Spin class, anyone?
On a very good day I can average about 250 Watts in an hour. Not sure how reliable the tech is though. The calories are definitely overestimated
Firstly i will admit to only having a vague idea of what a spin class is.

But if you are averaging 250 Watt over an hour, does that not automatically mean 215 kcal ?
Can I come out from behind the sofa yet?
