Women's rugby

Post by jean valjean »

In light of recent discussions I thought it worthwhile to start a thread on all things related to women's rugby in ulster and beyond. Bring your in depth thoughts here if you have any.

More tinkering in the Ireland back line for this week against Italy - 3 changes to the backs who played against France a fortnight ago. This graphic from RugbyKino shows how stark the differences between two squads are in terms of experience.

Neve Jones, Sadhbh McGrath, Brittany Hogan and Vicky Irwin are Ulster's reps. Only McGrath plays club rugby in Ulster. ImageImage

Another really disappointing loss for Ireland yesterday. It was probably the most frustrating game of this campaign so far as there were 4+ try opportunities squandered. In three games, Ireland have only scored a single try under their own steam (they got a penalty try yesterday). Their most dangerous attacking threats aren't even in the squad - they're in the Sevens.

England could conceivably put 100 points on them next week. They're at a very low ebb at the moment and it's sad to see.

I'd hope England use the game to give the extended squad a run out. There is nothing to be gained for them having a glorified training session and racking up 100 points.

They may well rotate for this game as they have a likely Grand Slam decider the following week at Twickenham in front of a 50,000+ crowd. I hope they do Image

It was really telling with the extra game in the Inter-Pros how much better Ulster were in the 3rd / 4th place play-offs. They need a bit of momentum to hit their stride and I was delighted they finally got the win after nearly 12 years. Now the monkey is off their backs but the IRFU has to make it a home and away format as a bare minimum next season, or speed up the Celtic Challenge to make it the 4 provinces rather than a combined team.
