We can neither conform nor deny that it may be discussed or not discussed, maybe.

Re: Plastic Pitch
In some ways, both are synthetic, however 3G pitches are sand and rubber filled whereas 4G does not have this fill.
4G is more like 5G and 6G in that the fill are not required.
One would automatically assume 4G is better than 3G, or 5G is better than 4G. This is not the case, it's very much horses for courses dependent on sporting requirements. It's not like the technology has moved on and something better is available as the numbers get higher, they're different designs.
4G requires less maintenance than 3G as the fill sand and rubber does not need replaced as it gets blown away / carried off in players crevices etc.
One big difference is that 3G is 100% World Rugby approved, 4G was not unless that has changed. I'd assume Ulster have done their homework.

I think I had heard the term 4G used for simply a higher quality/slightly tweaked rubber filled system - but that was many years ago. From what you say, it sounds like they have since developed a genuine different system using that term.

How does the partial synthetic pitch work then? Have heard of a mix of plastic and grass ( thormond park/ Rodney parade?) always looks more natural and doesn't get cut up. Why wouldn't ulster go for that?UlsterNo9 wrote:In some ways, both are synthetic, however 3G pitches are sand and rubber filled whereas 4G does not have this fill.

Re: Plastic Pitch
From what I understand (which is limited). All of the installation cost of artificial, all the maintenance costs of grass (in fact more??) , durability improved over grass, but not to the level of artificial.jean valjean wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 7:55 pmHow does the partial synthetic pitch work then? Re: Plastic Pitch
Planning application has gone in naming a 3G surface.
Ulster rugby website press release had stated 4G, along with BBC and Bel Tel articles.
Relief it is 3G as 4G isn't suitable for rugby.
