Favourite Matches and Memories

Post by UlsterNo9 »

Favourite matches and memories following Ulster, feeling a little nostalgia coming on.

There have been highlights and plenty of not so great moments.

Obvious highlights for myself a la I was there moments.... the 99 final win, putting 33 points on Martin Johnsons Tigers in 2004, the Celtic league win..... the 9-8 win in Castres, our 1st in France.

There are however a couple of obscure games in my ticket stub hub,The McKinney show down in Thomond Park, we won out 17-19 must be 10/11 years back. Thoroughly enjoyed it, up there in my memory and regarded as one of my favourite Ulster watching moments. Another was my one and only visit to Dave Parade, it was a Sunday fixture and they hoked us, if I remember correctly Diack started at No.8 and Humph Jr at fly half, but the welcome we got from the home fans was something else. It felt like going to an AIL game when it 1st took off not a professional occasion. Keen to just show good old fashioned hospitality.

Anyone any odd memories. Boxers being lost need not apply.

November 14, 1984. Ulster 15 Australia 13. The Heiney final. Ulster beating the Tigers and that victory over Bath where Andrew Trimble scored that try.

In no particular order

Humph Jr's kick to beat Biarritz in 2010

First time hositng Clermont in 2011 - they sent over 1000 fans and atmosphere was crazy

Munster QF obviously

Ruan's first match at Ravenhill v Glasgow - he scored every point i think

All within a fairly short timeframe at a point were we were turning into a decent team who could on thier day take on just about anyone.

Controversial opinion but the sarries game where Payne was sent off. Despite the result the atmosphere was terrific and a great occasion. On a happier note beating Dallaglio's wasps was a good night and the many hidings handed out to tigers.

For no particular logical reason, when we beat Gloucester on a freezing, pissing rain night, in a close fought match, c 2004/5, one of those many nights when players and fans were in tune, the place was rocking, serious slagging of a linesman who wore ill-advised skin tight shorts, had to defrost the young son in the car afterwards, trembling with cold but laughing his head off,....

I get you on that one. It was.... gladiatorial. The place was beyond intense.

I was at that 17-19 win at Thomond. We sent the kids downto face a strong Munster side and nicked it.

Some great wins at Ravenhill over the years against top French outfits who we had no right to beat on paper

Anyone remember the match at the old Ravers when Humph senior set the ball up to take a pen, then, after the other team had lined up for the kick, picked up the ball, charged for the line and scored in the corner? I've a feeling it was in a European game.

The fight with the ABs in 1988.
10 in a row inter pros.
Pre season friendly with Biarritz- Matthews looking up from a scrum to see where the referee was before biffing his international opponent...

The Toulouse QF with us hanging on by our finger tips, and Ward going to a birth... Selfish or what...

Unofficial world club championship game versus Queensland in the worst weather seen at Ravers in 86. Half of Australia playing and we lost 6 - 4 scoring the only try I think in a Tsunami.
Beating Oz with Chippers wonder kick in the p#ssing rain on a drab Wednesday afternoon- bussed to the game from the Model, given the afternoon off by EW Davies- Ligind :salut:

Tanking Toulouse many times at Ravers

Hammering Leicester 41-7.

The constant bad blood and fights with Stade.

D'Arcys greatest moment setting up Humphs jr Vs Clermont.

Bath away first time- Trimbles diagonal coast to coast wonder try.

Munster QF and taking the p#ss out of Munster fans as they left Turnip park- Connacht in disguise

First win away at Leicester and Quins in the snow, singing 10 Quins bombers.

No.1: Humph seniors wonder try Vs Stade in a packed SF at Ravers; Ghost Riders at half time...

I enjoyed that Diack try to win the rabo pro 12. The way he dummied inside and just put the ball down over the line really wound Sexton up.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?
