Aye - well I saw that too, but couldn't understand it.
One for the purists Cap'n. The use of the 'proper' function seemed wholly appropriate.

Red handed with the whisky, I understand!
While Cables and I would have argued over the type of whisky (but he chooses on this occasion), we would have agreed on the limitations of MS Excel's string handling.

Cables and I never argued over whisky - we debated.

He preferred his without an 'e' - I preferred mine with an 'e'

Would gladly be sharing a scotch with him now though.

BTW - check your pm's.

There was not another like him. I sought and valued his advice. I counted him as a friend and I shall miss him.

Bit of a lump in the throat reading through all these messages. Stanley was a true gentleman and I always enjoyed bumping into him at the URSC tent on a Friday night or a URSC event over the years. Nothing was too much trouble for him. And he always left you laughing or thinking or usually both. cables was a font of knowledge and I, like many here, have had the benefit of his wit and wisdom in correcting some silly point I've been trying to make (many times over).

He will be missed.

May I add my condolences to the Phillips family and all Stanley's friends. RIP Stanley. :salut:

"Cables"

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was our truth, our rock, our stone,
Our quiet voice, our flesh and bone,
The man who spoke and made us listen,
The gold in dirt that always glistened.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
If only every life could be as good.

Apologies to Auden whose words I could only "improve" in verses 3 and 4. Rest well Cables.

Just returned from holiday and am very saddened to hear this.

I always marvelled at the depth and accuracy of Cables' knowledge and he will be missed here. Condolences to the family circle.

Returned from holiday to find this very sad news. A fantastic contributor to this form; I enjoyed many debates about the finer points of statistics and the rules of the game with Cables. Will be sorely missed. My thoughts, of course, are with his family and loved ones.

I'm sure many out there in cyber land will be 'pleased' to hear that Cables made his final journey to the strains of 'Stand Up for the Ulstermen' on the chapel organ. The committal was accompanied by the 'World in Union' theme.

In a moving address his son illustrated Cables' character with a number of quotations from this very thread. It seems his on-line persona and that of rugby aficionado were replicated in the values he brought to his 'real'/family life.

Just an all round decent guy!

Deeply moving and dignified service. I am sure Cables would have been exceptionally proud of his Family and particularly his Son today.

Farewell Cables. :salut:

As BR and LKoTP have both said - moving and dignified.

With the odd bit of humour which the man himself would have appreciated.

I couldn't help but smile when I saw the name of the undertaker on a sign at the side of the hearse
- Ravenhill Funeral Services.

So, tomorrow evening, meeting at Ravenhill, new coach etc - Stanley will be missing and he will be missed :salut: :red:

Like promsandwich I have stood beside Stanley for years on the prom and never knew that he posted as Cables on this site - typical of the man of course who was modest and understated in all he did. I already greatly respected his rugby knowledge and all round decency however this information just heightended that respect. I will miss his company next season but look forward to many more years to come doing him proud with his boy on the prom - well done today big man! God bless Stanley, it was a pleasure!

I never knew cables but have followed him for many years here and on the darkside, but since his death i have been drawn to this thread several times a day.On first reading his son's thread informing us of the terrible news of the death of cables, i have felt very sad that someone in our little rugby forum has died. This news has really shook me up ,and i just hope we as members of the UAFC can keep his memory going. As i have posted before god bless cables and his family and friends. :blueafro:

It's marvellous that people from this forum attended Cables' funeral. Well done.
I'm currently a bit of an atheist myself but I quite liked that hymn.
