Massively out of fashion, not sure why. Sexton could have pulled the trigger v France and didn’t. By the sounds of it coming up to HT today we had an opportunity to & didn’t. I’d imagine Burns / Madigan would do it - Cooney less so.
Team orders maybe.
With a pack under pressure/poor weather personally I’d want a 10 who’d pull the trigger.

Agreed
I would love to see some stats on the percentages successful or unsuccessful of the line battering, in the context of 3 points going abegging. Seems now to be confined to the odd pot hot during advantage being played.

The drop goal being a viable threat would also give the defence something else to think about.

Munster yesterday showed the value of taking their three points when they were available.

it'd also be interesting to see how the percentage success has changed over time. I'd expect that because they're tried so rarely used now, one someone does go for one out of desperation with the pressure on they're more likely to miss.

The only player that comes to mind now still playing when I think of drop kicking is Francois Steyn. I wonder if he's still trying to knock them over from his own half for the Cheatahs...

Unless attempted by a back-row forward, drop goals probably don't affect the outcome of matches ...

... apparently.

Wow!
👍👍
Clearly never as prevalent as my dodgy memory had suggested, but confirmation that now as rare as hens teeth, with 4 in the last 10 years., And none for 5 years. I think there is still a place for them in closing out games with 5-8 point leads with a few minutes to go.........so long as you don't miss!!
C'mon Billy or Mads...........or JC

Just 19 there or roughly one per season.

The overall totals since 1995 are 53 for and 72 against which would suggest that the European fixtures are a better bet.

Another little stat. Craig Gilroy's last try for Ulster was in the 54-42 defeat in Dublin on 20 December 2019. Nil points in 13 subsequent appearances.

When did the new points system come in, i.e., the four points for a win and a four-try bonus point. Has that something to do with it? Agree that the DG is very under-used these days.

The days of settling for a drop goal to keep scoreboard moving are over due to the bonus system and teams will only go for one these days to clinch a win in the last few few seconds. This automatically cuts down the numbers attempted. Most modern fly halves would rather keep play going and either get a try or a penalty kick than take the pressure of drop goal.

The modern game can't go 5 seconds without a penalty.

A DG attempt used to be the go to option when playing penalty advantage. Now it's usually the crossfield kick.

When you factor in how many DGs were taken while playing advantage (a tactic I never fully understood), the recent scarcity of DG attempts is perhaps explained by the trend to play territorial defence dominated rugby and low-risk phase play in attack, only unleashing the attacking skills of your back-line once the refs arm is out. In current tactics, if you were to waste penalty advantages with DG attempts, you'd never see any attacking creativity and the real class wingers in the game might as well retire.
