I'm hoping they do understand GDPR which would explain why UR have been doing the promotions to avoid giving our emails to a third party.

One could be awkward and ponder if you have consented to said "outside company" being supplied with one's private data, but I assume it will be buried somewhere in the T&C's that nobody reads whilst renewing the ST.
GDPR doesn't permit that.

Consent has to be specific and informed, and lack of objection is not permitted either as consent.
