In the build up to the final try, the ref called, 'Use it!' but the maul rumbled on and went to ground. Does the call become redundant if the maul moves forward again?

Yes, the maul moving forward counts as using it. Same at scrum time, though when the front row has gone down and no infringement you've only the option to pick and go at 8 or pass out the back. Same at ruck.

The balls physical movement is the indicator.

Unexpectedly brilliant campaign from the 20s so far, I didn’t think it seemed like a strong year but they look good so far. I was really impressed by Wilson against wales, up against a giant front row, and took some heat but each time managed to muscle up and hold the scrum up - also looked handy in the loose. Lovely to see a promising TH from ulster I must say

McCormick has been excellent - absolutely archetypal build for a modern 2, really solid lad, lineout has been good and very lively ball in hand. Crothers has been good too, puts me in mind of Jordi Murphy, good at everything without being exceptional at anything - great work rate and tackle count, some nice link play and a couple of good poaches.

I like the look of McNabney, I thought he took a while to find his feet against wales but was good against France. Big broad frame, he’ll be able to pack a good few kilos on

A couple of stand-outs - Culhane looks like something special, kind of unlikely looking, gangly and no big disco muscles, but incredibly athletic and powerful in contact, cracking player to watch. And the LH Boyle was superb against France - like watching a young Cian Healy. I like the look of Devine at 9, also Brownlee looks like a very tidy 12.

Interesting to see how they go against Italy, who beat them in the warm up and have just beaten England..
