Re: Japan RWC
Sean O'Brien won't be there anyway. Hip operation number whatever.
it looks hard to see his career restarting at London Irish.
He was a real star of Irish rugby but getting only 56 caps over the last ten years shows you how attritional being a back row is. It could be worse - look at Leavy's plight at 24 years of age.
Thanks for the memories, SOB.

Re: Japan RWC
Indeed. Top player in his day and the fact he only got 56 caps says a lot about the attritional nature of his game. I read somewhere that he was only involved in 1 of Ireland's 3 championship winning sides, with no grand slam nor win over the AB's. He can still be rightly proud of all he achieved.

If Joe is taking a punt on the likes of Haley at this stage then McCloskey must consider himself unlucky. I thought he might get a run at a training camp at least before being cut at a later stage.

Nothing worse than Joe Schmidt scorned. Still huffing over McCloskey not sitting by the phone and instead going off with his mates to the Euros.

2/3. Henshaw and Stander for sure.
4. Another 9, probably Luke McGrath possibly Cooney.
5. Another hooker: Herring/Scannell.
6. Another second row: Beirne.
7. Utility back. Addison if fit or Conway.
8. Possibly a 10 like Carty or Scannell who can cover 10/centre. Some say Cooney could cover 10 but Joe barely rates him at 9. This will be the biggest headache.

Haley only there to justify his move to ireland. Assume the squad can be added to at any time, so would expect addison to feature at some point (if fit).

Re: Japan RWC
I think there will a ( a match best 23 ) for the Scottish match - the bench starting the next game with some of the starters against the Scots . Sexton being rested during one pool game .
Thus I believe he’ll take at least 3 out halfs
Feel for McCloskey when you see Dave Kearney in the mix along wit Chris Farrell and Scannell .
It’s not as if the Munster Back line has been an attacking force scaring the opposition .
Munster seem to have a good defense but I consider this has been based round the back row rather than having a super mid field partnership .
With Rab Kearney now on a one year contract not that surprised to see Haley being introduced to the set up would be surprised to see him on the plane to Japan .

I've a feeling he'll go with Ruddock over Bierne. Could see Ruddock captaining vs Russia and Japan, he also covers 2nd row.Dave wrote:1. Another prop. McGrath or Porter.UlsterNo9 wrote:Healy

I don't know why but I think he'll take Cooney to cover 9, 10 and goal kick. You're not going to bring both a 3rd choice scrum and out half who wont get significant game time. If indeed you bring a 3rd choice scrum half it makes no sense for it to be McGrath.

Re: Japan RWC
I think with Beirne and Hendo offering 6 cover, I'm not sure Ruddock will make the final squad. I'm basing this on what I think Joe will do. Particularly since Beirne plays more like a backrow.UlsterNo9 wrote:I've a feeling he'll go with Ruddock over Bierne. I'm with you on Cooney but I don't think Joe trusts him. The goal kicking aspect might help. I think though as Cooney has not had any significant game time at 10, Joe may not consider him as a realistic option. Sexton and Carbery have both had their injury issues this season.

Re: Japan RWC
At International level neither Beirne or Henderson are go enough to start at 6 both might do the job off the bench if injury forces them into that role but both are more natural mobile second rows .
At this stage I doubt if playing either at 6 is part of Joes thinking

That would be a big loss. Hope it isn't true. I don't like to see players forced to retire though injury.jean valjean wrote:Just read on D4 forum that addison may not play again. Can someone in the know add anything? Please....
