Revisiting old TV.

Post by AyeYerMa »

Taken a bit of notion lately for collecting old telly classics and watching them in marathon sessions.
So far -

Edge Of Darkness
Private Schulz
Blott On The Landscape
Secret Army
Quatermass ('79)

Currently working on Sapphire & Steel. - Which isn't quite up to the standard of the previous lot, but does a lot for me in the nostalgia stakes... Well, Joanna Lumley does.

Any other suggestions?

well done - you know it makes sense :D

Seriously - couple of good ones in your list. A few old comedy ones are always worth watching, likes of "Yes Minister" or "Yes Prime Minister" which seem as relevant today as they were whne first made because the politicos are still arguing over the same issues as they were 30-40 years ago. Most of those are shown as endless re-runs on Dave and similar channels if you have have them on your viewing box.

Both classics. These and others mentioned by Grumps, YM & YPM, that
just seem to get better with time. But what of the ones that were top
of the pile and have aged badly.......eg Cheers!

I have to say that I find the Young Ones hard to watch today. Interesting for the nostalgia factor and when you consider how 'cutting-edge' it was at the time. But not the water-cooler shared-experience it would have been in the early 80s if we hadn't just drunk the occassional glass of tap-water back then (and only if we were sick, very hot or had just eaten the spiciest food known at the time - a Vesta chicken curry).

On the flip-side - Farty Towels is still lol funny, even on the 1000th time of watching.

Open all hours, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools, Porridge, Bread in that order.

Slightly more recent- Brittas Empire, Father Ted, Royle Family.

Wish they would stick up some of Milligans Q series again.

Father Ted is on permanent re-run in our house. Love it, love it, love it.

It was cr@p as was most of his TV work.

His books were brilliant (most of them - some cr@p in there too)

His war memoires, a trilogy in 6 (or was it 7?) parts is absolutely fascinating, funny, yet heart breaking in a way, and what he went through towards the end of the war goes a long way to explaining his character - tragic but funny.

Puckoon is a legend in its own lunchtime - an absloute classic and should be on the reading list for every GCSE student

Similar to my experience of Monty Python's Flying Circus - probably a generation thing. I know part of MP's appeal for me was that my parents hated it ...... that and the occasional wanton partial nudity, thrown in for no apparent reason - quite shocking in those days. Alway managed to elicit a 'tut' or six from my mother (back in the days of one TV per household - at least in my experience).

Have watched a few episodes in recent years and parts are still genius, but most is cringeworthy rubbish.

Only about 10% of Python's is even watchable IMO. But the good bits....

I think the vanguard of broadcast comedy is often not as brilliant as we think at the time.

The Goons, Pythons, NTNON, Young Ones, Spitting Image, ... any return to them is often dissapointing.

I'd like to look at old Kenny Everett shows to see how they stand-up, but I can't remember ever seeing the scheduled - something tells me there's a copyright problem with them.
