There's nowt wrong with it. It just does not have to be the sole Ulster chant (it's not really a song) in perpetuity.

And as for 'only taking the tune'.... Fnnnrk!

I don't think we're saying that the band's presense was spontaneous, but the seemingly random nature of what and when they played (albeit from a limited set list) seemed to have a lighter touch of organization than I have seen elsewhere. It may have been manufactured, but it did not stink of commercialism. (IMHO).

The family stand is a good spot for it (he says comfortably ensconsed on the terrace)

So they had:

I'll tell me ma
SUFTU
I think there was one rendition of Ulster till I die.

Was that the lot? Fair to say it wasn't many, but it's already about 3 times as many songs as get sung at Ravers in their absence, so you could look at the set list as ambitious.

The other thing was, I thought the were actually very good. They kept a good tempo and sounded like they'd been doing it for a long time.

If any of ye's are on this board, good on ye's.

I have no idea what they played or how many times.

Yes ossifer, I had drink taken :stout: but though I was aware of them they did not really enter my conciousness, I was watching the rugby.

Maybe yis should all try that. However I have no objection to them in principle, I just don't give a tinker's fook.

On the subject of atmosphere, I stood beside a certain poster here who attempt a few times to get a bit of crowd action going & having failed once myself, even after an entreaty to "Sing yis barstewards" I frankly gave up and just guldered from time to time.

An atmosphere as dull as ditch water, though it often is when we look comfortable & the opposition aren't threatening to humiliate us.

We may need to put an ad in the Belelaugh for some Gulderers, then again, as I've said before, be careful what you wish for.
NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

While I personally was watching the rugby rathe than monitoring the atmosphere ;) - I didn't think it was too bad. Good noise on opposition line-outs. I think the crowd can take credit for at least one free-kick. Did I hear a redition of "Are you Rory in disguise?" Good noise for some of the prolonged defensive efforts too. It's not Ravenhill, but it's getting there.

Just a hunch, but perhaps the regular poster here is actually a blow in and not that familiar with the way we do things at Ravenhill. ;)

That Treviso hooker seriously struggled with the heckling. The one on the Prom side where he threw the ball straight into the ground. The one on the Terrace side where he dummied, dummied again and started walking towards his prop before he thought about throwing it and having the FK given against him.

For a Pro12 game against "the Italians" I thought the atmosphere was good. Not what it will be in a fortnight, but good nonetheless.

In general the problem is all songs with a loose Ulster connection are WICK. The sort of clown who rocks up to Ravers would be mortified to blast out "I'll tell me Ma". For my money Albert Mooney can pish aff back from whence he came.

"Ulster fortil I corpse" is a fecking dirge, unlikely to get the passions stirred.

Its all a bit square peg , round hole if you were to canvass my opinion.

Crowd "songs" chants need to be short & to the point & above all instantly memorable.

It has always irked me that the :mexican: play a Van Morrison qune betimes, time perhaps to reclaim the Bard of Hynford Street. Fortunately, the title word in the Van Morrison Classic "Gloria" has an identical number of letters to the word "Ulster" - I'm just saying, right?

Remember I voted, "Don't give a fook".

Does the official blessing of the Band by the powers that be unfortunately mean that it has been decided by those in charge that Cheerleaders are off the agenda? The Ulster rugby public has a rite 2 no.

Actually BR, I reckon he has been on this forum, more or less since the start, of the 2 of us, I'm the blow-in, even in one or two of my previous existences. >EW

I have no doubt about his credentials on this forum - it was his history of attendance at Ravenhill I was questioning ;)

There is also the not inconsiderable problem of many having either a primary or secondary set of lyrics which make reference to putting someone else to the sword... Along with their wenches and companion animals. And that's not a euphemism for nilling Zebre.

The band seemed well taken from my corner of the world, however... I reckon we were about as far from them as it was possible to get and still see the match.

Said it before, I liked the band. Thought they added something different. The problem they had was that people initially seemed to think they had to sing along with them, so a few brave souls tried to belt out the words of 'I'll tell me ma...' before discovering, as everyone does, that it's too fast and has too many words for the inebbriated brain to remember easily. Once people accepted this fact and contented themselves with clapping along, it seemed to go off a bit better. I don't accept all this pessimism about the atmosphere at the new ground. People forget that there were plenty of nights at the old ground when the place was anything but bouncing. It's all new, it's not finished, and people are still getting used to it. Give it time. It's still Ravenhill and we're still Ulster.
