Diack is not a first taker ball carrier he is an old fashion back row cover defender , which is role I expect him to play on Sunday as cover against the ball carrying Frontrowforwards of Georgia who will try to blarge their way up field in possession requiring frequently two players to take them to ground and deny the off load . Ireland having alternative ball carriers don't need Diack in that role . I expect him when Ireland are going forward to line out behind the centres

I thought Copeland was ahead of Diack but admittedly haven't seen him play for Munster. A quick browse on mf and they seem to think that Copeland is lucky to be in the squad. He doesn't seem to be living up to expectation. Diack has at least been playing regularly and performing at a consistent level.

It's not a no win situation at all. You are right to a degree he will be judged by others in that he is only playing against Georgia.

Crucially, however, it is how Joe judges him is crucial. Joe is looking for players that can slot into his side and do the job he has asked of them. If Cave can do that then he will remain in the mix, if he can't then he's essentially had his chances and not taken them.

Remember Schmidt plays rugby by numbers almost to the Nth degree. He values players who play within his system and who do not make mistakes and do not miss tackles. Witness the selection of Dave Average Kearney and McFadden ahead of more precocious talents like Zebo and Gilroy for example.

I like what Schmidt is doing to be honest on the whole. He is developing a squad. The idea he would intentionally overlook Cave is preposterous, Joe wants as many options as possible. He has seen something in Payne he likes and given his track record over the last four or five seasons I am inclined to give him a bit of slack.

Conceivably/potentially Schmidt might actually believe that the two best 13's in Ireland currently are actually Payne and Cave....now wouldn't that be mad ted. That's what this selection suggests to me.

Ruck ball 2 or 3 metres out. Ireland always pick or pop to static runners
South Africa, France, Australia and NZ all pop to runners at pace, from deep.
A harder skill to get right. But one that yields tries

Problem is, if you have a brad pitt scrum half then you can do FA
