2016-17 Champions' Cup Qualification

Post by ruckover »

So after round 20 of both the Guinness PRO12 and Aviva Premiership, several more teams wrapped up their place in next season's Champions' Cup. Leinster, Connacht and Glasgow are in from the PRO12 with ourselves on the verge of qualification while in the Premiership three teams are already qualified in Saracens, Wasps and Exeter while Leicester are more or less guaranteed their spot too.

The only big team no longer able to qualify for the Champions' Cup next season is Bath, however Stade Francais are on the verge of being ruled out as a possibility also.

The full break down:

GUINNESS PRO12
Qualified: Leinster Rugby, Connacht Rugby, Glasgow Warriors
Almost there: Ulster Rugby
Out of the running: None (Although they cannot qualify courtesy of their league position, the Dragons can still win the Challenge Cup)

AVIVA PREMIERSHIP
Qualified: Saracens, Wasps, Exeter Chiefs
Almost there: Leicester Tigers
Out of the running: Bath Rugby, Worcester Warriors, Newcastle Falcons, London Irish

TOP14
Qualified: None
Almost there: ASM Clermont Auvergne
Out of the running: Oyonnax Rugby, Agen

Give us a chance Ruckie, that was only Rd 20.

We'll need points from both the Leinster and Ospreys games yet.........

Beat the Ladyboys and we finish fourth.
Lose both matches and three of Scarlets, Edinburgh, Munster and Cardiff have to pass us, which is unlikely, given that Edinburgh play Munster and Cardiff.

Last night's defeat confirms Ulster as Rank 4 in the Sooper Dooper seeding process.

Rank 1 3 play off winners
Rank 2 3 play off RUs
Rank 3 Wasps + 2
Rank 4 Ulster, Tigers + 1
Rank 5 Saints, Scarlets + 1
Rank 6 Sale, Munster + 1
Rank 7 Zebre + 2

1 chance in 3 of Ulster being a tier 2 seed.

Saints and Scarlets are confirmed as tier 3 seeds.

Sale, Munster and Zebre are confirmed as tier 4 seeds.

A broad range of possibilities exists.

There's a 66% chance of two Irish teams in Tier 1 so that certainly cuts down the possibilities.

It doesn't. All pro 12 teams are kept apart in the top three tiers, regardless of union.

Munster as a pot 4 side, will have to get Glasgow or Scarlets as the Pro 12 side in their group.

Which presumably increases the chance of one of the other Irish sides getting Zebre.

Thanks for the point of info btw BR. Wasn't aware of that one :thumleft:
