In the short term, Paul Marshall (rib) and Craig Gilroy (concussion) will both miss Saturday's trip to Treviso with the scrum half aiming for a return by the end of the month while the Ireland winger will undergo the standard return to play protocols.

Full-back Charles Piutau will also miss Saturday's game after he picked up a minor thumb injury in training, but will likely be back for selection against the Scarlets next week.

Three development players are also unavailable due to injuries picked up in pre-season matches, including tighthead prop Jonny Simpson (ankle) who it is hoped will be available for selection at the end of October.

Centre Mark Best is expected to be back in contention in two weeks after a thigh injury, while scrum half Dave Shanahan is 2-3 weeks away after a sternoclavicular joint injury picked up against Northampton.

Chris Henry (shoulder) and Wiehahn Herbst (groin) are both still eight weeks away from a return to action after their respective surgeries while Ricky Lutton and Jonny Murphy could return in the next month after groin injuries.

There was better news on long-term absentees Dan Tuohy (ankle) and Tommy Bowe (knee) who have both entered the final stages of their rehab and could be as little as four weeks away from a return to the squad.

Marcell Coetzee's return date is still set at January 2017 after his successful knee surgery, while Pete Nelson is still rehabbing a left foot injury sustained in December 2015, but has no return to play date set yet.

In the Hughes Insurance Academy, Conall Boomer is set to discover the extent of a shoulder injury he picked up in last week's defeat to Leinster Academy when he visits a specialist.

David Busby has suffered a hand injury in training and will be out for 6-7 weeks, as will Jack Owens who has had surgery on his knee, while Rory Butler is undergoing return to play protocols after getting concussed in the win over Canada A.[/tag]
