The survey was designed to gather feedback from players, facilitators and supporters (lapsed and current) to understand levels of. Satisfaction and motivation in domestic rugby as well as barriers, opportunities, likes and dislikes.

The information will be channelled directly into the IRFU’s next iteration of its strategic plan.

“The first thing we want to do is thank our respondents,” said project lead and IRFU Business Analyst Dr Jennifer Kavanagh.

“The response rate was unprecedented and there are a huge amount of valid insights we’ll be able to draw from the feedback.”

The next phase of the project will include a deep dive into the data set including focus groups and workshops.

Kavanagh added: “What’s clear for now is that current and prospective players, coaches, volunteers and officials want choice and more control over the role of rugby in their lives.

“The response rate itself reveals just out engaged our community is and so we’ll look forward to communicating more findings and the strategies they will feed into.”

Key Findings Included:

Overall satisfaction with rugby involvement is high – 87% of respondents reported as Very Satisfied or Satisfied.
Players play to socialise and stay healthy
1/3 of female players would like to play more but do not believe there are opportunities to do so
Players stop playing rugby due to injury, work commitments and family commitments
Over 1/3 of lapsed players would like to play again
Facilitators want to give back to the game and feel part of the rugby community
Threatening touchline behaviour is among the biggest perceived threats to the spirit of the game.
Participants in all roles are likely to continue in their role next season
The survey formed part of Irish Rugby’s launch of #AnswerTheCall.

#AnswerTheCall is a wide ranging umbrella campaign to grow and develop the grassroots of the game around the excitement of Rugby World Cup 2023.

The launch in March also included an announcement around training and education resources to support clubs and schools heading into the 2023/24 season with player recruitment and retention.

These resources were originally announced as a webinar series but will now take the format of online learning and research modules. RWC Legacy Working Group chair David Ryan explains:

“The IRFU have hosted a number of really successful webinars over the past few years and they’re a really strong way to get the word out about important matters for the rugby community.

“At the same time we’re always looking at new ways to make it easy for volunteers to access the resources they need. Given the time of year, we also want to be understanding of people’s time. So from the end of June onwards – rugby clubs and schools will be able to access these resources the way they need to.”

More details on #AnswerTheCall resources will be announced in the coming weeks.

I wonder how much that load of twaddle cost.

Why not try a google search. Type in IRFU state of the game. There are lots of links there.

All they are doing is making the Summer and Autumn tests now a competitive competition ffs, read the article , they envisage a tier 2 as well with promotion and relegation, this will allow the current tier 2 teams a chance to play COMPETITIVE games against tier 1 , I suspect that a tier3 will fit in later , competitive games will attract more fans, more fans more money, the issue will be the investment into tier 2/(3 )

Suggest you look more into it before a bitch fest 🤦‍♀️

Change is good, plastic pitch’s are good
Easy, Gerry, take it easy.

If by 'competitive' you mean 'evenly matched', well and good, but if you mean 'as part of a structured competition', I don't think it's good. The summer and autum tests are as close as we can get to 'friendlies' (I know that's hardly an accurate term). Make them into a structured competition and things get turned up a wee notch and move just a wee bit further from playing sport for the sheer joy of it all.

Investment into tier 2 / 3? Only if it benefits the tier 1 nations. Do you really think they want more teams challenging their positions at the top of the tree?

Me, cynical? Never. I just live in this wee dream world where sport is played for enjoyment.

Interesting post from Irish Rugby site.

A 24 man IQ Rugby squad has been named for their forthcoming Provincial tour series against Ulster and Connacht.

The players, who are all Irish Qualified (IQ) have come through the IQ Rugby and IRFU Exiles. Six of the squad – Cameron Ward, Daniel Green, Joseph O’Rourke, Matthew Wright, Ollie Byrne and Rhodri Jones – featured in the 2022 tour.

Wright also featured for the Ireland U18 Clubs against Italy in 2022.

There’s a familiar name in the squad as Sebastian Easterby-Gray, nephew of Ireland internationals Simon and Guy, is named. Both Simon and Guy came through the IRFU Exiles. Guy won 28 caps for Ireland and is Head of Rugby Operations with Leinster Rugby. Simon made 65 appearances for Ireland and captained his country; he is the current Ireland Men’s Defence Coach.

The squad will face Ulster U19s at Newforge on July 26th before taking on Connacht at The Sportsground on July 29th.

The squad will be coached by former Ireland international Kevin Maggs and his colleague in the IQ Rugby colleagues Steve McGinnis and Ross Finlay.

In recent seasons a number of IQ Rugby players have represented Ireland including Chay Mullins who has lined out at U20, 7s and Emerging Ireland and is now with Connacht.

Very interesting podcast from Stuart Lancaster. His comments on his approach to Racing make me think that there could be stormy days ahead for him but possibly very good ones. https://leadersinsport.com/performance- ... Newsletter

From Planet Rugby

"In Australia, the Queensland Reds announced that ex-London Irish head coach Les Kiss would take over from Brad Thorn at the Super Rugby side. The 58-year-old has signed a two-year contract with his hometown team.

Kiss was reportedly a target for Edinburgh, who were looking to fill Mike Blair’s void, but have instead announced that former Sharks’ head coach Sean Everitt will take charge of the side as the new senior coach.

Everitt has signed an initial one-year contract with the Scottish outfit and arrivals at the side following a brief consultancy stint with the Bulls".

Interesting article on rugby league. Could they say the same thing about Union? Maybe in a few places, but not many, I think.

If you've ever wondered why hamstring injuries are so common, even in training and warmup: https://theconversation.com/rugby-world ... he%20sport
The article has some links to other rugby related topics, which all have further links...

Can’t think of too many players who’ve been ruled out of the tournament with hamstring issues.

Ben Curry may have been picked I guess.

You’d think that the article would mention the vulnerability of the jackaller.
