It's t'other way 'round.

Major is short for sergeant-major in this context.

A Russian major general is equivalent to a British brigadier and a US 1 star general.

A Russian lieutenant general is equivalent to a British major general and a US 2 star general.

Generally speaking it's majorly confusing.
