Jack Kyle was a lovely humble gentleman who had time for everyone

Mike Gibson whilst well mannered could be a bit grumpy

Didn't Mike Gibson play in a turgid 0-0 draw? He was a solicitor so that must count against him in the great reckoning.

Indeed yes Grumps & your clarification by other means too. :thumleft:

I've long been of the opinion that it is often a disappointment to meet people you admire, simply for their sporting ability. I suppose given how the human race, in general, lets me down on a daily basis, with a vast majority needing to be culled like seal pups, it is odd that I have still harboured hopes that the truly gifted will invariably be fine human beings. Still, if you are still able to learn lessons in your latter years, at least you have not yet quite fossilised.

I've always found it curious that many of my contemporaries still listen to the same music as 30/40 years ago, dross like the bloody Beatles or feckin' ABBA. Of course, I still hold Steely Dan as the finest example of jazz/funk/rock/fusion of all time and I am endlessly affectionate to the Stones and The Who, but I do like to move along as the years pass, but FFFS don't play rap in my presence. It avoids the brain becoming lazy and atrophied.

I should allude to one great exception to the above. I was fortunate to share a table at lunch and sit beside Sir Garfield Sobers, at a cricket match at North Down, not a single hint of being a star amongst plebs, just a thoroughly good bloke to spend 45 minutes with during the lunch break and greatly entertaining. With his all-rounder skill, it came as no surprise that he was a scratch golfer and there was more golf than cricket talked.

We had a short interaction with CMHG at Crawfordsburn Country Park a few weeks ago. Afterwards Mrs BM said "what a lovely man". An objective view from somebody who hadn't a baldy notion who she had been talking to

Addison may well be the welcome coming, but he gives BOD as his sporting hero.
We need to get more a Guinness and Tayto into him.
He hasn’t yet been fully assimilated.

When he learns to appreciate BOD from the perspective of an Ulster player/supporter he should come to his senses.

I shall be having a word with the committee to find out how you managed to get in through the gate at North Down, let alone sit beside the great one!!! :duck:

Fair play Merv, I'm very glad to hear that.

All I can say is that wasn't my experience on meeting one of my boyhood heroes. :(

Like many on here I would rate both Kyle and Gibson above BOD. I am probably one of the few on here that have played on teams against both of these greats, in Kyle's case it was in his twilight playing careers at full back for North Thirds and in Gibson's case it was in a School cup quarter final.
I have heard Kyle speak at a couple of events and have been impressed but Gibson's versatiliy and ability to play multiple positions at the top level of the sport probably puts him ahead as a player. Whist many were impressed by Gibson's attacking ability his defence was very effective too.

My memories of Jack Kyle go back decades when he came to our school to present the prizes at our school sports day. A real gentleman who took time to chat with all the kids and signed hundreds of autographs that day and I still have mine.
There will never be another Jack Kyle as rugby was a totally different game in his day and any comparisons with him are irrelevant.
I think Lowry is fantastic and will become, in time, a full International and even a Lions player. But he will be his own man in a totally different sporting era and leave his own unique mark on the game we all love. Good luck to him as a star of the future.

We are both 'reelin' in the years. Baggy but not 'stowin' away the time.' Rap is set at the chronological age of 2. Rhymes for imbeciles and twunts.
