Glasgow probably deserved to win
Maul defence was bad.

Glasgow deserved to win. Our back row were not at the match. Line-out poor in first half but improved with Herring.
Whitehouse was Whitehouse. He could have cost both sides the game. Great to see such a mature game from Doak.

Ulster lacked power in resisting the glasgow pack. There was very little breakdown threat. When a more powerful pack comes to town we would need some players back. Hendo really. Not sure who else there is. Reidy looked tired and Jones just lacks bulk. Big V will be an assist in this regard.

It all felt very much like opening night. Very entertaining game to be at.

You were close - uncomfortable win after securing the bonus point early-ish.

Agreed, ger. Winning a game where the tension lasts until the last second is much more entertaining than a runaway romp (unless, of course, we're romping home against the Mexicans).
Still too many wee mistakes: knock-ons, turnovers etc.
Tackling was very mixed with some great brick walls but some weak stuff from Baloucoune and Stockdale.
Lineout really has to get sorted. Does Roberts need to up that part of his game? Positively, he doesn't half punch above his weight going forward.
Doak looked the part as scrum half and off the tee.
We don't seem to have a proper jackal.
I quite like the 50:22 rule.

The line out war noticeable. Otherwise the crowd lapped up the defensive effort. They fed off it and I enjoyed it. Sport is entertainment after all. Work to be done but I’m happy with what I saw.

Our lack of threat defensively at the breakdown really sticks out in my mind.
We never looked like turning over the ball or poaching, was it a deliberate tactic not to do it?
And if it was a deliberate tactic, someone educate me as to why.

It wasn't deliberate. Look at the personnel in the backrow
Wonder would Ulster have won that game if wee Dave come on instead of Doak?

Wee Dave did come on ...
His work with the water bottles was exemplary.

I don’t think his kicking off the tee would have been quite so impressive.
Not sure Burns would have knocked those over either.

(missed the 1st 15-20ins)
I thought Ulster looked the much more comfortable team. The scoreline obviously disagreed.
When they did attack they looked like scoring and unlike recent seasons, secured the tries relatively efficiently; rather than spending 15 minutes camped within 10m of the line to eventually get over it.
Glasgow on the other hand, had to work much harder for their scores. Ulster's defence looked much better organised.
Don't know the possession stats, but I'd say we were wellon top on terms of points per minute of possession.
Yes they eventually scored, but if we can manage the ball better, reducing their opportunity to attack, that will reduce our points conceded massively. Some of the ball management was laughable, with particular criticism of Lowry (???) for converting a safe defensive scrum to a Glasgow lineout on the 22 in the dying stages of the game. I mean WTF?

Not sure what law the referee applied to allow the Glasgow try and a yellow card to Hume with out that try -- the game would have been dead and Ulster would have maintained their focus better on playing an attacking game rather than defence.
Yesterday I pointed out there are two teams on the pitch -- and the result depends on the performance of both.
Glasgow are not the easy opponents everybody was assuming -- the fact is they have a tall efficient and effective second row -- to guarantee their own line out ball and to put pressure on the opposition line out
Once upon a time in the days of the wet leather ball the scrum was the most important set piece -- nowadays the most important set piece is the line out -- there are more line outs than scrums.
It was the Glasgow line out kept them in the game and Ulster under pressure .
With a referee who randomly applies the laws of the game contesting the breakdown can be dangerous -- a doubtful decision would put Glasgow in the Ulster 22 with the line out to come -- my take would be that the not contesting the breakdown in this match, in the second half at least, was a deliberate tactic .
And while some are of the opinion Glasgow were the better side the fact is that Ulster 5 metre attack and defence was better was better than Glasgows the only area of the game where Glasgow were superior was the line out .
