What are they doing in training?

Ask the new fitness coach.....

"We would hope we wouldn’t come up against anyone that would play at a higher intensity,” he says. “We are trying to come up with a game plan that exceeds the demands we’ve come against before.

“It’s important that the players are prepared to meet and exceed the demands they meet in match play. That was our goal in Limerick. That is our goal in Ulster, that players will never meet higher intensity in a game or higher endurance than they will ever meet in a training scenario.

That sounds a bit counter intuitive. You should rise to the demands of an intense match rather than play down to it. And if players tart to get regularly injured during training?

The gym tends to be very controlled and safe. Much less chance of injury there than pitch or contact sessions.
World Rugby's latest recommendations on limiting full contact in training should reduce injuries too.

No "new" injury concerns is a very disingenuous (UR) way of putting it!

This is nuts. The club income and therefore the players wages comes from paying spectators for the real matches. We deserve to see our best players as often as possible. Wiping players out in non income generating " high intensity " training sessions is a form of hari kari.......especially if we don't have strength in depth in key positions. Absolute bloody nonsense.

That's why World Rugby are recommending 30 minutes of set piece training and 15 minutes of full contact per week.

And I don't accept the rationale that high intensity Hurley training ( largely non contact) is comparable to high intensity rugby training ( with currently a lot of contact)

S&C trainers aren't involved in contact training
It's all science and data driven so their job is to keep guys ready to perform.

My mistake..but some of the injuries ( especially hamstrings etc) are non contact?
and
who is in charge of the training that's causes the other injuries?

Well the contact and pitch work is the stuff that they want to be matching or exceeding the intensity of actual matches. They measure this using GPS data. No idea about the nuts and bolts of it but I'm concerned if 4 players have been injured in training recently. Maybe some journos could ask a decent question on this but unlikely. They seem too interested in stirring the pot with Hendo's lions comments.

We could always wrap them in cotton wool.

The real question is whether we have a higher proportion of Training caused injuries than other comparable sides. We do seem to have a lot, especially at the beginning of each season.

Players get injured in training whether it’s rugby or Stuart Broad tearing his calf or Izzy Brown of PNE snapping his Achilles before he’s even made a competitive appearance.

It would be highly unlikely for each club to suffer exactly the same number.
