Nursing a semi

Post by StandUp »

So now we know the semis;

Stormers v Ulster
Leinster v Bulls

What are your thoughts?
Leinster rode weegies like porn stars. Then again, my sons school team would have given Glasgow a run for their money.
Bulls weren’t particularly impressive.
Stormers played some exciting attacking rugby but they were against a poor Edinburgh and they had defensive holes all over the pitch that a good team would exploit.
Ulster dismantled a Munster team who were a shadow of their former selves.
It would appear that the disparity between the 4 or 5 good teams and the rest is greater than ever. Not good for the league, and may get worse as finances are tightened.

Have to say, I would fancy our chances next week. It's at sea level I think so no altitude problems. We should be really up for it and we're going with not far off as strong a team as we have at the minute, bar longer term injuries.

Team we put out last time we played them....

(15-9) Mike Lowry, Craig Gilroy, Stewart Moore, Stuart McCloskey, Rob Lyttle, Billy Burns, John Cooney;

(1-8) Eric O’Sullivan, Rob Herring, Marty Moore, Alan O’Connor (Capt.), Kieran Treadwell, Greg Jones, Marcus Rea, Duane Vermeulen.

Replacements: Tom Stewart, Callum Reid, Gareth Milasinovich, Mick Kearney, Jordi Murphy, David Shanahan, Luke Marshall, Ethan McIlroy.

Probably 12 of that 23 will be in the match day squad for the semi. Last time we lost by 3 after being robbed by the TMO. I'd fancy our chances in a one off game.

That’s a very good point Jean. If we have our starting 15 from Friday night, that should put a big dent in the scoreline. I’m still worried about our replacements though.
They’ve done the journey recently so that shouldn’t be a shock to the system. A pain in the balls perhaps, but not a shock.
I’m assuming they will fly out Monday or Tuesday?

Hopes are up. It would be a shame if they were completely dashed. Say for example, if Ulster couldn't back it up a week later away from home.

C’mon Dave, be realistic, that would never happen.

I hope that cheating kunt Immelmann is given the rest of the season off. He can’t be allowed anywhere near this.

Were the Stormers at full strength when we played them? Genuine question as I don't know.

They had a few changes between the team that beat us and the Edinburgh game at the weekend, but that may be down to new injuries and injury return.

Remember Deon Fourie in their back row being a right pain in the testicles last time out.

Looks like their replacement centre is having to be replaced again. We certainly should have the edge in midfield.

I’d back the ulster midfield against any in the league, even the Leinster pair.

Big Al 100% on the mid field and the rest of the backline aren’t too shabby either.

What's the story with Lowry seems to be a bit of a mystery regarding his injury. Was the broken cheekbone/recovery time confirmed? Probably unlikely but any chance of sneaking on the plane to SA?

UR have to play with maturity, and impose their gameplan. We were opened up by 2 tries within 10 mins last time playing headless rugby against a back 3 scoring tries for fun. Once we switched on, we were the better side albeit a hybrid one.

The addition of IH, and Timoney in the pack should increase the firepower upfront. TOT is starting to solidify in the tight, and should cover for Marty who is a big miss (get well soon, brilliant player for UR).

If we go with the same back 3 v Munster it is an upgrade on the stormers match.

Couple of points of interest:

The breakdown was a complete farce last time with the weak ref, and their backrow constantly off their feet unpenalised and getting illegal penalty turnovers. Hopefully with a northern hemisphere ref & tmo, we will get a fairer contest, plus you throw in IH & timoney meaning more breakdown firepower.

My concern is travel fatigue, and heat/injury hangovers from Munster. Toe to toe Id back us v stormers.

As an aside what’s the score with Luke Marshall? thought he was super in SA, hopefully no reinjury and he’s good to go - looked like he was never away. Time for this group of players to show they are mentally tough enough to back performances up. What is very very noticeable is D McF is STILL spewing over the stormers result and publicly stating we owe them one. Big & rare opportunity to turn over a saffer side in their own back yard - big eyes watching that I’d say in ire coaching camp.
