Ulster Signings

Post by kingofthehill »

Not sure there has been a thread on this.

Recruitment wise over the last 5-6 years.

Who has been a successful signing?

*Success*

Marcel Coetzee
John Cooney
Marty Moore
Will Addison (I won’t hear that he hasn’t been a success)
Rory Sutherland (very short term but hard not to put him here)
Duane Vermeulan considering the circumstances (not the player of a few years ago)

*Decent*

Henry Speight
Jordi Murphy
Bradley Roberts
Alby Mathewson
Billy Burns

*Miss*

Sam Carter
Frank Bradshaw Ryan
Ian Madigan
Declan Moore
Gareth Milasinovich
Jeffery Toomaga Allen
Jack McGrath
David O’Connor
Bill Johnston
Ian Nagle
Peter Browne
Jean Deysel
Alan Bennie
Mick Kearney
Matt Faddes

*Jury is out*

Jake Flannery
Michael McDonald
Sean Reffell

*Had to be included in the list*

Leone Nakarawa
Arno Botha

The recruitment at Ulster in my view has been poor for a long time.

Two of successes have spent more time injured than fit.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?

Marcell, Addison and Moore have all spent long periods out injured but it wouldn’t sit with me having them in any other group.

Two ‘successes’ missing from your list KOTH:

Christian Leali’ifano and Stefan Terblanche

They may have been fairly short term but we got real value from both.

Sorry - just realised your 5-6 year timeframe rules out Stefan!

Nigh on total inability to sign decent level abrasive forwards, we have little to no strength in depth, it’s a total killer after 60/65 mins to beat top teams with zero forward bench impact.

I’d be interested to know how many were found to be skills deficient/clearly not up to pro level needed, and how many were S&C deficient. Too much bargain basement squad fillers, adding nothing on the pitch, and frankly gambles that never paid off.
Surely there must be some kind of SA IQ connection to exploit, this can’t carry on.

I think you may have placed him in the wrong category.

He’s a decent player (going through a bad patch) but not going to win you trophies. Happy to have him in a squad.

Definitely not in the miss group.

Is the Ulster contingent of the AIL so devoid of talent that we sign dross like Jones and Matty?
Or don’t we have anyone who can spot talent?

He’s in his fifth season of a bad patch. A fine example of the mediocrity within Ulster.

The worry for me is that only Moore is going to be here next year from the success group.

Just can’t see Cooney staying and don’t know what will happen with Addison.

Kitschoff is a cracking signing. I just hope there are a few more top level ones.

The question I would like to know is who is responsible for signing these players and why are they getting the majority of them wrong.

Is it Bryn? McFarland?

If this slump continues, I can see a lot of half empty games for the rest of the season, meaning the money won’t be there for more decent signings.
