Ulster and the IRFU are one and the same. Kinda like if a Tesco Metro loses money but is sustained by the Tesco Extra stores, or online sales. Companies have more profitable areas of their business. In rugby the money is at international level. It subsidises the club/provincial game. Do Leinster even make money?

Ulster will always be at a disadvantage in the IRFU system due to different vat laws and player tax benefits. Maybe the IRFU should take that into account to level the playing field.

Columbo, another great post. IRFU will not let the Branch become insolvent but the key is what cost-cutting will they insist on & what will that mean for Ulster in the short term? Management’s job is to mitigate & manage both internal & external risks. It doesn’t seem that they did this at all well. Will anyone be held responsible? One hopes IRFU will make changes at the top including in the Management Committee, replacement(s) to improve the culture & introduce better financial management. They certainly won’t waste their own time micro managing the Branch. Only overt messages so far are with regard to players leaving & giving more responsibility to Bryn who presumably bears some responsibility. Does IRFU see a cost-cutting move in consolidating two roles? Not sure that would resolve leadership issue.

I see Munster are due to host a select All blacks XV at thomond park this November.

This season they’ve played a friendly vs South Africa ‘A’ and Harlequins, and now they booking fixtures for next season.

How come, given Ulsters financial struggles, are Ulster rugby not hosting these exhibition matches?

If so such a game would need to make money re covering the match fees from the visiting union and therefore you would need a guaranteed sell out etc. On top of that Ravenhill ONLY holds 18,000 approx v 26,000 at Thomond Park and 45,000 at PUC in Cork where Munster hosted both South Africa A and the Crusaders.

Munster are the defending champions so are a worthy scalp for the travelling team to test themselves against. Ulster are just ulster.
