I did some research and it seems this dates back to c.1000ad and the Benedictine monk and scholar Ælfric of Eynsham, who used loca nu (Old English for “look now” or “behold”) around the year 1000. The colonists turned it into "Look mate".

Learnings is a more recent phenomenon and may have corporate origins.

Of course, there could be Biblical roots: Revelation 1:7

‘Look, he is coming with the clouds,’ and ‘every eye will see him, even those who pierced him’; and all peoples on earth ‘will mourn because of him.’ So shall it be! Amen.'

Or if you prefer the King James version: 'Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.'

I rather fancy hearing Rory saying, 'Behold, the pack did much better in the second half'

On a related issue.

'Lionesses', etc Why do international teams have to have a wee name? Why can't they just be called England or whatever?

I feel a certain amount of the blame for this lies with the New Zealanders. And the Aussies have taken it to extreme, but I worry that it is spreading to otherwise sensible shores

I think the stupid name annoys me more than the jingoistic hyperbole.

Having said that I find it irritating when the BBC don't use the gender adjective on their sports headlines. With the rise in weemins rugby/soccer/cricket it can be confusing.

definitely not I have two granddaughters who play football -- mad keen they are .

Must say last night was the first time i smiled at german goal
it upset me in two ways

firstly I have nothing against the english woman football team nice group of overaged schoolgirls straight out of St Trinnians

secondly i dislike German football supporters having once set in a hotel full of Germans in Crete as they cheered every goal real scored in the first half against Liverpool -- I nearly left at half time -- thankfully I didn't the silence when liverpool won was most enjoyable .

No its the bl--dy English Media -- Gloating for the next ten years . forgetting that basically most of the teams in the competion are amateurs playing against professionals

Overall survival so far 1 year

A small reminder to those over 45 if you haven't had your PSA checked in the last 3 years --- think about it -- then do it
