I'm conducting a little experiment during my extended stay in Espana.
I hire cars for 2 week blocks. Not sure why but it is by far the cheapest way.
My mileage and driving patterns are consistent I,e. A daily commute of 20 miles each way combined with some urban driving,
The cars I've been given all have less than 10000 km on the clock.
Fortnight 1 Fiat 500 petrol self charging hybrid - 48.8 mpg
Fortnight 2 Kia Picanto petrol - 51.3 mpg
Would one not expect the hybrid to offer better fuel economy?
Picked up a Fiat Panda today. I'll give you the stats in 2 weeks!

Hi Merv
The Fiat 500 is powered by a 1000 cc petrol engine assisted by an electric motor maximum power produced would be just short of 70hp.
The Kia Picanto that you hired would be the euro spec version with a 1250cc petrol engine which produces around 84 hp.
The Fiat being a smaller less powerful engine with the extra weight of an electric motor has to rev a a bit higher to attain the same power output hence uses a bit more fuel.
The Kia being the same weight of car (less the electric motor) with a more powerful 1250cc engine doesn't need to rev as high to attain the same momentum hence uses a bit less fuel.
I find that to attain the best power to weight economy in a mild hybrid it is best to go for a 1600cc engine either in petrol or diesel.
Cheers

You'll be excited to learn I'm thinking of starting a thread on heat pumps! Anybody here qualified to dispense advice on those?

This is actually not a stupid suggestion but could usefully be expanded to include any heating systems that will be permitted once gas, oil, solid fuel are banned and there isn't enough electricity to use for heating after all the car batteries are charged up. Bring back the tread mills in prisons anyone

On a very good day I can average about 250 Watts in an hour. Not sure how reliable the tech is though. The calories are definitely overestimatedsolidarity wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 7:18 pmAll the wasted energy of exercise bikes should be harnessed as well.
