Shan, I've had my passport checked crossing the border on more than one occassion.
From Ryanair's point of view, if they fly someone into ROI who is refused entry, then AFAIK, they have to fly them back.

Ryanair should only be used if there is absolutely no other way to get to your destination, Aer Lingus are a far better airline.
