The days of having a professional captain who didn't bat or bowl much are long gone. In my youth I watched Lancashire quite a bit. They were captained by the late Jack Bond who didn't bowl and rarely had much of an impact on the score board when batting. He was though a great leader who brought the best out of the rest of the team. Definitely worth a place in the side.

Correct, as did his former teammate David Hughes in the twilight of his career.

Mike Brearley may as well have not batted.
Good stuff by Ireland today.
Stokes pretended his knee was fine but it didn’t look like it when he took the catch.
Mike had a big brain though. Think he averaged about 22
On the evidence Stokes shouldn't be in the side for the first test. England would have much better balance without him at the moment.
Michael McNamee isn't bad on the TMS team but I wish he would stop being so deferential to 'Sir' Alastair Cook. By all means use the title to introduce him but leave it at that.
Bloody good batters don’t always make good pundits either.
Only saw the highlights yesterday but Leach and Root bowled some real buffet stuff at times.
Not sure we can rely on spin to tie up an end against the Aussies and that leaves us short with the ball.
I reckon Stokes knows he will have to bowl and it could almost be a Fred in ‘09 situation.

Scotland v Ireland was a bit closer!
Lord’s for me on Thursday.
Envious! Enjoy.
I only got there once. Early 80s. Lillee and Thompson versus Boycott and Gooch. 48 total by lunch, Gooch 44 of them…….. and bad light stopped play for the day!!!!
