What's Fat and Runs?

Post by Dewi Barnes »

The FRU and SCOOP have got together to enter the Belfast Marathon.

There is still plenty of time for other teams to enter. Maybe the UAFC should put one together.

Check out our training diaries at http://www.thefru.co.uk and follow the appropiate links.

To be honest that covers most of the board!
The trouble with referees is that they just don't care which side wins - Tom Canterbury.

Here chaps, it for a good cause and if Mulligan doing it, the boys can expect a bit of coverage, globally.

Mind you the photographer better have an extra wide angle lens so to speak.

I may even join up myself

I understand the organisers of this years marathon have made route changes and designed a special leg for the race after hearing that a messageboard team had been entered for the relay. It is not thought that Cap'n Grumpy, one of the SCOOP/FRU team, will make use of the special leg for the race and will run under his own steam.

The SCOOP/FRU team consists of The Original Kimble, (TOK to his friends), Cap'n Grumpy, (Grumpy to everybody), Pressbox, FRU President Mr. Dewi Barnes (not to be confused with another DB) and Holywood Mike, (HWM to those who can't be bothered writing out his name in full.)

The first leg of the course extends all the way out the M1 to the Maze and there is some debate as to who will run this ultimately lengthy leg of the race. The motorway is closed for the day as it's rumoured contractors will make inroads on the Maze, site of the new National Stadium under cover of the race in line with government policy of sneaking things in under peoples noses. The contestant running this leg, Holywood Mike possibly, as he's expressed a wish to check the disused railway links, will hare up the motorway before crossing a ploughed field down a disused tunnel and into the bowels of the ex prison where they will play a game of the Crystal Maze with a specially selected team from the UAFC, (thought to be the After Five Club) as no one will see this part of the race.

Upon emerging from the Maze the contestant will return down the motorway taking a brief detour round B&Q car park at Sprucefield where Kevin Maggs will be handing out B&Q bottled water before handing over the baton to the second contestant believed to be Pressbox for the most environmentally dangerous section of the race along the North Foreshore.

PB was thought to be the best candidate for this leg of the race as he expunges the least hot air of all five runners, (though that's not saying much), and will be the least likely to blow up in the gaseous wastes on the shores of Belfast Lough. Pressbox will hand over the baton for the Titanic Quarter section of the race to an as yet unamed contestant for what is rated as the most boring part of the race, with ruined turn of the century buildings and derelict shipyard cranes for company. HWM is thought to be keen to run this part of the race as well, as it ends in Cultra, though Grumps wants to reacquaint himself with shipbuilding because he's called cap'n.

The penultimate leg of the race is planned as a leisurely stroll from Cultra to the Ormeau Park via Laganside and Maysfield where contestants can take in stunning views of the waterway and assess the impact of getting to Ormeau Park in a hurry, if they are by chance on any future date holed up in a city centre watering hole. A lap in the leafy surrounds of Ormeau and it's time to hand over the baton to the Original Kimble for the final leg. (Mr. Dewi Barnes it is believed has bought himself the Ormeau leg of the race as he secretly believes it's the easiest part to run and knows the Park well.)

The Original Kimble will take the baton up Botanic Avenue past Madisons, likely to be waved on his way there by CT and YM sitting under patrio umbrellas sipping Pimms and along to the Rosetta where he will drop in for a drink with the URSC committee before finally finishing triumphantly at Ravers and a Mike Reid hosted reception for him in the beer tent.
Mike Reid will not actually be in the beer tent but will hold talks with TOK on next year's MOU from the comfort of the oul house in an as yet undeveloped Ravenhill.
