Recieved a wee pop-up box this morning notifying me that a new pm had arrived.............opened up the post box and lo and behold nothing there.
Anybody else had this problem or are the spirits at work?

Haven't had that experience browner - but it could well be that someone has sent you a PM and then changed their mind and deleted it before you logged in to read it. I'm not sure whether the pop-up will work correctly in that situation.....

You can even edit a pm if it's still in the outbox browner.

yes.
Once you send them they move to your "outbox" you can still view edit and delete them there. When thy've been read they move from the outbox to the "sentbox" after that it is too late to do anything to them as the recipient already has his copy.
