Any decent reasons for a Yes vote, apart from blind patriotism?

What are your good reasons for a no vote, Colin?

From where I'm standing, there are plenty of good reasons for Independence. And given that I'm not Scottish, I seriously doubt patriotism (blind or not) is one of them.

Maybe so Neil, but even if I was allowed a say I'd not feel it was my place to use it. It might be different if I was a resident but as it stands I really don't think it's any of my business.

And Russ you are entitled to your thread. But even for a silly season topic I think it's a bit daft. Especially so when you consider that within Scotland there are thousands of Rangers fans who have made their decision based on nothing more that the deep-seated belief that they are "Unionists/Loyalists" and are obliged to vote against independence and that there are probably just as many Celtic fans who feel that they are "Nationalists/Republicans" and must vote for it. And you think it is wise to open a debate on this on an Ulster rugby site in the week before the Twelfth. Sure you may as well start a flegs and anthems debate....
Paul.

PWR; fair enough. Maybe I feel a little differently as I lived in Scotland for five years but I certainly feel it find to hold my own opinion on the matter. Indeed, I think one of the many positive things about the nature of the referendum is that it asks the questions of people currently in Scotland, rather than Scottish people not necessarily in the country. Whether by design or not is another matter, of course, but it certainly suggests why the independence vote is about a lot more than blind nationalism.

Yes. It would be great for England to be rid of this drain on them.

Yip, despite all the bullshyte the English are trying to put about, downplaying the amounts of natural resources etc. Its oooour oil, the English wouldn't give a fiddlers about keeping brother Jock were it not for the wealth in its land & seas.

The main reason to vote yes is never having a chube like Cameron or The Ed Miller Band running your country. Fat Alec knows a bit more about what Scotland needs and wants than those two English puddin's.

I can't wait for til see what sort of Flegs we'll be flying next twelth    The Union Jake will look somewhat different, maybe the Welsh will get a look in for a change.

NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

Just get rid of that dragon and it would be almost as perfect as the Cross of St. George on it's own. :D

I think if I was in Scotland I'd probably vote yes, not out of patriotism but just because I think it'd make economic sense. The government in Westminster is always quite London-centric in it's thinking and I suspect the government of an independant Scotland would be better equipped to attract outside investment (they'd have control over things like corporation tax) and you'd think they'd certainly be more pro-active in trying.

It's almost certainly not going to happen, but my main concern with a yes vote would be that it'd inflict a Tory government on the rest of us more often...

I wonder how many Scots actually know or understand the arguments? Or indeed where you would get any kind of an objective overview? They will just vote with their gut feeling.
